Man pleads guilty in 2012 death of bicyclist in Davidson Co.

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A man has plead guilty in the 2012 death of a bicyclist on the I-85 Bus. loop near Davidson County Community College, according to the Lexington Dispatch.

Samuel Thomas Gray, 31, of Thomasville, accepted a plea deal that will result in six months in prison and three years of probation. He received a suspended sentence of between two years, one month and three years, six months.

The guilty plea stems from the death of Joshua Daniel Perry, 30, of Meridian, Idaho, on March 13, 2012.

Gray struck Perry with a 2008 Toyota pickup truck about four miles north of Lexington on Bus. 85.

Gray was reportedly driving about 55 mph when he hit Perry. Perry was thrown more than 100 feet from his bicycle and not wearing a helmet.

Perry was traveling with another bicyclist who was not injured.

Gray reportedly had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14 at the time.

The Dispatch reports that Gray will have to serve more prison time should he violate the conditions of probation, which includes refraining from alcohol or controlled substances.

Gray was also ordered to pay $20,419.82 in restitution.
