UNCG issues campus alert, suspect now ‘in custody’

UPDATE 4:50 p.m. — The suspect arrested was identified as 54-year-old Frank Rankin. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats and second degree trespassing.

He was placed in the Guilford County Jail under a $1,000 secured bond.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — UNCG issued an alert on Wednesday after a man armed with a knife was spotted near Tate St.

The school posted this message on its website around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday:

“BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR A BLK MALE 5’9″ 30-40 YRS OLD WEARING A BLK TOBAGGAN, WHITE T-SHIRT. SUBJECT IS ARMED WITH A KNIFE AND LAST SEEN IN THE AREA OF TATE ST NEAR CAMPUS. IF YOU SEE ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS CONTACT POLICE.”

At 11:40 a.m., police said the suspect was in custody:

“POLICE HAVE THE SUSPECT IN CUSTODY. YOU CAN RETURN TO YOUR NORMAL ACTIVITIES.”
