GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A local DJ facing backlash for tweets he made about a gay candidate running for "Mr. Winston-Salem State" has issued an apology to the student.
Aaron McCorkle is a junior and he’s openly gay. Last week pictures of McCorkle dressed in drag were leaked online and 102 JAMZ DJ Brian “B-Daht” McLaughlin questioned WSSU allowing McCorkle to run.
One of DJ B-Daht’s tweets read, “Y’all really letting a dude that goes in drag, run for Mr. Ram? Have Y’all lost Y’all minds, man?!”
DJ B-Daht is also a sports announcer at WSSU. Another tweet read, “I will relieve myself of my PA duties if a drag queen is appointed the position of Mr. WSSU. I won’t be affiliated. No way.”
In a series of tweets Wednesday evening, McLaughlin apologized, saying the experience was "definitely a lesson learned."
"All I can do is ask for your forgiveness & hope what I said doesn't affect Aaron's candidacy for Mr. WSSU," one tweet read.
The votes were tallied for Mr. WSSU Wednesday. McCorkle lost to Brandon Bowden, 727 votes to 565 votes.
