HILLSVILLE, Va. — More than 50 people were sent to the hospital for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at Virginia Produce Company, according to police.
Crews were dispatched to the facility around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Responding rescue units from Carroll, Grayson, Wythe and Surry counties found several people outside the building complaining of headaches, dizziness, nausea and difficulty breathing.
Those affected by symptoms were transported to Twin County Regional Hospital, Northern Hospital of Surry County and Wythe County Community Hospital. At least three people were transported by helicopter to Duke University Hospital for further treatment.
Fire, rescue and police units are still trying to determine what type of gas may be responsible for the injuries.
