Drag photos cause controversy for gay student running for ‘Mr. WSSU’

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – There is controversy surrounding a candidate running for Mr. Winston-Salem State University.

Aaron McCorkle is a junior and he’s openly gay.

Last week pictures of McCorkle dressed in drag were leaked online and now he’s getting a lot of backlash from them. Some tweets from 102 JAMZ DJ Brian “B-Daht” McLaughlin are some of the most talked about backlash.

tweetsOne of DJ B-Daht’s tweets read, “Y’all really letting a dude that goes in drag, run for Mr. Ram? Have Y’all lost Y’all minds, man?!”

DJ B-Daht is also a sports announcer at WSSU. Another tweet read, “I will relieve myself of my PA duties if a drag queen is appointed the position of Mr. WSSU. I won’t be affiliated. No way.”

Aaron says he has read all the tweets.

“[They are] hurtful, discouraging, vicious,” he said. “I would say it was ignorant as well. I feel the things that were said, it really hurt me to think that we have a WSSU alum going against a student running for a position that can also represent his university. It kind of hurt me.

FOX8 did reach out to DJ B-Daht. He respectfully declined our interview.

WSSU released a statement saying they don’t condone anything that McLaughlin has said and they are disappointed in the situation.

Mr. WSSU will be named on Wednesday.

Very disappointed in this choice of headline and the choice of photos accompanying this story. This controversy is over the unprovoked online harassment and attacks by B-Daht and others against a student who has done nothing to deserve them. Dear Fox 8, you can and should do better. Change the headline, issue a correction and issue an apology.

  • ....

Clean campus record really? Let’s not forget the reason why he got kicked out of SGA in the first place and didn’t finish his term as Mr. Sophomore and also his criminal record while at wssu.

  • Sofia

That is totally justified. How can a wanna-be woman earn a position of a Man? That position is representing the REAL MEN of WSSU. How TF would you feel? That’s embarrassing and degrading. My son WILL NOT ATTEND SOME F’D UP SH*T LIKE THAT.

    • Donna

I am right there with you! Well actually my son wouldn’t want to attend if there were! It is unfair that he can run for Mr Wssu when he cannot even identify with which gender he prefers to be.

  • FaithC

People are so narrow minded. Is he a good student? Does he stay out of trouble? Will he be good in the position? That is all that should matter.

B-Daht will bash this student in his tweets but not in an interview. I guess he does not have as much nerve person to person, he needs to be relieved of his PA duties.

    • Donna

I guess that you didn’t see Aaron’s criminal record before you decided to reply?! Just last year he had a bond set at $15000 for larceny and has 4 different charges. Read before you speak!

I agree with Matt Comer’s comments. This was a very poor choice of headline, This controversy was caused by the attacks of others on this student. You should reword the title and issue an apology.

I am utterly sadden by this whole situation. As WSSU Alum I in no fashion approve the bashing and bullying of a any student for their own personal life choices. Every Mr. WSSU brings something different to the table as they all should, and every gentleman that has held that position has not been all saints either. The morale of this leadership position is to allow the students and the student body a Avenue of having the responsibility of holding one of the biggest leadership positions a student could hold before being released into the real world. What have we come to as a university as a people as a community where Alumni, students and administration put great energy into trying sabotage young man’s image. Shed light on his positive qualities and what good he can bring this legendary platform. The bashing the bullying MUST stop I am almost ashamed to say BDAT was a colleague of mine. Get over it it’s NEW day!

I would like to say, that before you speak openly about this story. Please review all of the facts (Faith C). Whatever glitters in life is not gold; everyone is rallying behind, a person they feel is a victim. However, we soon forget that everyone including the defendant is entitled to their own opinion. He has the right to perform freedom of speech, I’m just stating that. Maybe he should not have said it publicly, but he is entitled to his own opinion. Also, if you are WSSU alum, please do not misrepresent us by not performing accurate grammar and writing checks before you submit your arguments (Nathaniel), as you are missing some words in your statement. In addition, if you are alumni please urge all of the alum that have so diligently posted their comments to come out and support our rams in other ways, not just when there is controversy that has arisen. Our institution and WSSU communities will once again take the biggest hit, as we are proving to the world that our institution is a rag & tag group of buffoons.

Professor Q please forgive me for my comment was rushed and yes I am sure there were many errors. Possibly you should consider tutoring. However, you clearly got my point. My support for MY university is on going and I will always support them to my availability. Please be advise Professor that Aaron is someone’s son adults need to be a but more aware of their delivery. As my grandmother always reminded me “when you dig a ditch for your brother you will be the first fall” there will always be consequences for negative actions.

While it is true that Daht has the right to say something bigoted and ignorant, Q, others also have the right to rebuke him for saying something bigoted, homophobic and ignorant.

  • Frustrated

So sick of seeing those who choose to live against what God ordain highlighted in the media. Why does this lifestyle have to be forced on those of us who choose to follow biblical truth… I am sick of hearing about the LGBT community!!!

    • Sarah

How exactly is this lifestyle being forced upon you? Because you have to be reminded that it exists? Or is someone forcing you to dress in drag?

THAT would be forcing a lifestyle upon you. Get over it, there are people not like you all around.

      • JT

Right on, Sarah–if anything, the Christofascists have been forcing their Bronze Age mythology and superstition on the rest of us for far too long.

    • dewey

if the bible is so right, why did they exclude books? I ain’t a butt-ranger, but your religion is not a better choice….Christinsanity doesn’t enrich your life, it keeps you from living, those of them that do “live free” under the guise of Christinsanity are the ones you remember….Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker and my personal fave…that male prostitute loving, meth smoking Ted Haggard

    • yomama

I agree with JT. You guys are permitted to speak freely about anything and everything because it’s your religion and I feel that you should absolutley have that right. BUT when someone who doesn’t share your religious opinion or agenda speaks up and voices their opinion, then the S**T hits the fan. Take a look at what you’re saying, frustrated. No one is forcing you to take part in the homesexual lifestyle. Spare me your better than thou speeches about how you’re sick of being told that whatever behavior is okay. You have to be able to live in a world where everything is not your way. It’s call tolerance, google it if you don’t understand it. When will we ever live in a world where people are not so selfish and narcisistic that they expect people to not be who they are and live a lie because it makes THEM uncomfortable. This is not the 1950’s anymore already. If you expect to be able to preach your religious message at all times, then you need to allow others who don’t share your point of view the same opportunity. AND might I add that your views and beliefs are constantly being placed on us non-religious people on an everyday basis, especially since we are here in the bible belt. But we are expected to take it up the tail pipe and deal with it. Maybe you need to learn to do the same.

  • Tgibbs

If he was forced out of a position because of his criminal record shouldn’t that still apply in this situation because he would still be representing the school

  • The Q

This fella has put himself out there for public ridicule. He can’t then complain if everyone doesn’t like him. This isn’t middle school guys. He’s a grown man that is running for a position to represent his school. Not everyone has to “accept” his cross dressing ways, much less his all alledged criminal record and academic issues. Let’s calm down with the bully talk. It’s twitter…..seriously

    • yomama

What exactly DO you consider to be “bullying”? You need to google it because apparantely, you don’t know the definition.

  • The Q

Daht will most likely apologize and move on to be a successful WSSU alum that everyone can be proud of. The other fella can play up this “controversy” for votes and may even win. I simply hope he holds himself to the standards that he has for everyone else and forgives this blip in an otherwise praiseworthy fellow alum.

    • Nathaniel

You sound a bit jaded maybe even bitter. I actually pray nothing but the best for both parties involved for Daht now has a wife and has a family to raise so hopefully he has learned his lesson and for the sack of his family he does go to be successful.

  • Really?

the status as Mr. WSSU should be dependant on whether or not he is a good student, a leader, and a good example of the school not his clothing choice.

  • Justin Ludwig

What happened to when a man dressed like a woman people KNEW it was wrong. There is a reason you get negative attention: its not right! They cant even fit you right unless you malnourished your body and cut some special parts off.

  • dewey

“Aaron says he has read all the tweets.”

…..yet another self-solving problem, don’t read them….I don’t watch the movie Rosewood because it fires me up in a bad way….let’s start a petition to end social media networking….they have them for everything else

  • Nicholas O.

the fact of the matter is that a young man who is running for mr. wssu is being bullied simply because of his sexual orientation and/or gender identity. this is the 21st century this is 2014 it is long past time for people to put their 20th century 1950’s worldview to bed (racism, sexism.homophobia) etc. mr. wssu should be elected based on his qualifications for the position not based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity or peoples personal prejudices

    • yomama

Very well said Nicholas O. This is the point of the entire matter. We teach our kids to not bully and be tolerant and compassionate and we as adults do exactly what we teach them not to do by bullying by not allowing someone to persue their hopes and dreams simply because we don’t agree with their sexual orientation? Not good examples for todays youth.

      • dewey

…and that’s the reason you got 7 year olds hanging themselves….first they took away fighting. the zero tolerance rule has directly led to the suicides we are seeing today from those that have so much to live for

…then the kid had no way to resolve anything with their bully, so the only other alternative is suicide or bringing a gun to school….there’s certain things that they need to figure out for themselves, like how to use their hands

    • Kyle S..

Is gender identity not a qualification for a position that’s inherently gender-biased (MISTER Wssu)? That is what some have taken issue with. Sexual orientation is not the issue as there have likely been Mr. WSSUs in the past who were homosexual.

Aside from gender identity, he has a relatively lengthy criminal record including arrests for theft and robbery.

      http://arrestinquiryweb.co.mecklenburg.nc.us/ArrestBrowse.aspx?LastName=mccorkle&FirstName=aaron&PID=&ArrestNumber=&ArrestDate=&LastDayArrests=False

      • Konvict

actually there is a warrant for his arrest for a couple of felonies….A felon is the new MR RAM??????????????????????????

  • scott

why is shims livestyle choice being forced on people who want no part of it. Its like the transgender”girl” who sued to use the girls bathroom. What about the normal students who dont like it . where are their rights?
Yes you have the right to be who you want to be but it doesnt give you the right to rub it in everyone elses face.
