LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A SWAT team in Lincoln County shot and killed a man overnight who they said murdered his estranged wife just hours earlier.

The standoff and shooting happened just four miles away from Salem Church Road where they found the body of the man’s wife.

Police tracked down the suspect but when an officer tried to talk to him, they said the man took out a gun and shot at the officers.

Police fired back until the man ran into the apartment complex.

SWAT team members eventually threw a tear gas canister into the apartment to try and disorient him.

Officers told WSOC that just after midnight Friday, the man eventually came out and started shooting at police again.

Police fired back again, killing him.

No names have been released.
