BURLINGTON, N.C. — A man was killed in a traffic accident on South Mebane Street Monday morning, according to police

Just before 10 a.m., Garland Rudolph Gilbert, 75, of Burlington, was traveling west on South Mebane Street when he lost control of his vehicle. At the intersection of Webb Avenue, Gilbert’s Chrysler PT Cruiser veered left into oncoming traffic, ran off the roadway and struck a building at 124-A S. Mebane St.

Police say Gilbert was apparently suffering from some type of medical condition that caused the accident.

Gilbert was transported to Alamance Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:48 a.m.

The building the vehicle crashed into was occupied at the time but no injuries to people inside were reported. Damage to the building is estimated at $100,000.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
