Suspect in custody after UNC-Chapel Hill reports dangerous person

Police said a suspect is in custody after the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill issued an alert Sunday for an armed and dangerous person on or near campus.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Police said a suspect is in custody after the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill issued an alert Sunday for an armed and dangerous person on or near campus.

The Daily Tar Heel reported around 5 p.m. Sunday that the suspect was in custody after being found on East Franklin Street.

The suspect reportedly had knives on him, according to WNCN. No injuries were reported.

UNC officials posted to the school’s website shortly before 4:30 p.m. that the school has activated its sirens. An “all clear” was issued about an hour after the incident.

When the sirens sound, classroom and campus activities stop and are temporarily suspended. Officials said the sirens only sound during emergencies.

Students were urged to stay inside a classroom or go to their residence hall and avoid certain parts of campus.

Keep us posted. My son says that he heard that was someone who pulled a knife on another student. The assailant ran away and the officials are looking for him now. I hop he is not in one of the dorm rooms. my son is at HoJo (Hinton James). Please keep us posted as the sirens are going off and it sounds like a lock-down.

As a part of team “They”, let me say this….one must consider that a conviction doesn’t always net what your looking for. I love getting convictions….but, being found guilty doesn’t always mean the person will be off the streets. It’s the punishment that counts. In North Carolina it is called Structured Sentencing. Each crime has a level of punishment which can be enhanced by a person’s past criminal record. A clean record could mean the person is put on probation…not sent to prison. It is all set forth by the NC General Assembly. Glad no one was hurt today.
