Family wants answers after homicide in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Piedmont family wants answers following the brutal beating of a man on Friendly Avenue in Greensboro that resulted in his death.

Victoria Sandidge can tell you all about her dad. “His favorite color was navy blue, his birthday was on Jan. 30,” says Victoria, Warren Portis’s daughter.

The 8-year-old’s dad was assaulted early Sunday morning and later died as a result of injuries sustained. Greensboro Police say Portis and a friend were walking back to their car on West Friendly Avenue when three men assaulted them.

Police haven’t made any arrests yet.

“I want them to know they took a piece from so many people. Whatever it was it definitely wasn’t worth his life,” says LaToya Warre, Portis’s sister.

Portis died at the hospital on Monday but Victoria was able to see her dad and leave him a note.

“Hi, daddy I wish you weren’t in a coma when I came. When I came you were asleep. When you wake up can you please call me,” the note read.

Victoria is a second grader and knows the difference between right and wrong and believes the right thing will happen to whoever took her dad from her.

“Whoever did what they did to my dad will have to go to jail forever and say why they did that,” she said.

Greensboro Police believe Portis may have had some type of argument earlier in the night that could have something to do with the assault. They are asking if anyone saw or heard anything around 2:30 Sunday morning on West Friendly between Elm Street and Eugene Street to give them a call.
