RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — A Seagrove man died in a single-vehicle wreck Tuesday morning after troopers say his car slid out of control on an icy bridge.

The accident occurred around 7:17 a.m. on Lanes Mill Road in southeastern Randolph County.

Donald Ray Cagle Jr., 40, of 6526 Osborn Mill Road, Seagrove, died at the scene.

Trooper K.L. Brooks said Cagle was on his way to work, driving eastbound on Lanes Mill Road when he lost control of his Ford Ranger on an icy bridge.

Cagle went around a curve, crossed the icy bridge, lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road to the left and struck a tree.

Troopers told the Courier-Tribune that most county roads were dry Tuesday morning, but the clear roads were deceptive, because area bridges were still slick.

It was reported that Cagle was wearing a seat belt, but the impact of the crash pinned him inside and he died from his injuries.

Trooper Brooks estimated that the truck was traveling an estimated 60-65 mph, which he said were “too fast for conditions.”

I had a Ranger. Nice little truck…except…really light on the rear axle. Liked to get squirrely even if was just wet. I would NEVER have driven it in icy conditions. If you’ve got one…beware.

I ran into him about a year ago an we had spoke a couple of times since then. It’s crazy to think how short life can be. R.I.P.
