Tractor-trailer crashes off U.S. 52 bridge, hits gas main at butcher shop; 7 injured

FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A tractor-trailer lost control on an icy bridge Monday night, crashed through a guardrail and hit a gas main when it landed on a business below.

The accident happened on U.S. 52 southbound at the bridge over Liberty Street at mile marker 110.

According to police, at least seven people were injured but no life threatening injuries have been reported.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

Officials say several vehicles were stopped in the roadway due to a previous accident when the tractor trailer swerved to avoid colliding with them.

The tractor-trailer crashed through a guardrail, landed below hitting a gas main at the Liberty Butcher Shop and catching fire.

Liberty Butcher Shop is a total loss after the fire. Seven people, including the owner, worked at the business and all are now without jobs. The owner of 30 years told FOX8 that they do not plan to rebuild.

Crews were still putting out hot spots Tuesday morning and say they will have to use heavy machinery to tear away debris because it is not safe for firefighters to enter the structure.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews had difficulty getting to them due to traffic accidents and iced over bridges.

The 2800 and 2900 blocks of Liberty Street remain closed and expected to remain closed for a few more hours Tuesday morning.

Motorists are encouraged to stay off the roads Tuesday morning unless it’s an emergency.

Is the child that the firefighter was holding last night alright? What about the family of the child?

Maybe ig there 18 wheelers would slow the flip down, then we wouldnt have so many accidents involving these death traps!

I agree. tractor and trailers were speeding like crazy yesterday with the ice and sleet coming down. they had no regard for other peoples safety. they need to slow down.

Maybe you should get behind the steering wheel of an 18 wheeler before making an uneducated comment about the driving conduct of all truck drivers. Maybe if the cars hadn’t been driving so fast and wrecked on the bridge the 18 wheeler wouldn’t be sitting on top of a building, 7 people wouldn’t have been injured, and 7 people wouldn’t be out of work today. From the way I see it, the truck driver put his own life in jeopardy BY SWERVING TO AVOID CARS THAT STOPPED IN THE ROAD FROM A PREVIOUS ACCIDENT!
