CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The agent for wide receiver Steve Smith says his client is done playing for the Carolina Panthers.

Smith’s long-time representative Derrick Fox told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Smith “is not going to play for the Panthers next year, I know that. I just don’t know when that transaction is going to take place.”

There were reports Tuesday of the Carolina Panthers trying to trade Smith.

Smith has played 13 years in the NFL, all with the Panthers. His 2013 performance fell off dramatically.

Regardless of whether the Panthers cut Smith or keep him, the club will have to pay him $3 million this season as part of the three-year contract extension he signed in 2012.

Smith’s current contract runs through 2016.

@Bob Jones- That’s all you have to say to the franchises greatest player? Good riddance to you. You’re no fan.

Steve was, and is, tough as they come. He was super quick with good hands and lb for lb one of the strongest players in the league.

He was also a punk who ran his mouth constantly, making himself and the team look bad. His ego and aggression outshone his playmaking ability and his attitude detracted from the team’s cohesion.

Before Jerry Richardson did his best to make a man out of him, he was one bad night and car ride away from being another Rae Carruth.

Good riddance. Hope he enjoys his time with the Raiders, or Ravens.

well he can careless now since he is older and his performance obviously isnt like it used to be. If I were him, I would take my millions and sit at home and watch the Panthers lose each week with Cam trying to do something without him being out there taking double coverage and opening up options for other receivers. Steve Smith is the best player to ever play at Carolina hands down, but all he hears about is Cam Newton this and that…bout time for Steve to leave and watch the Panthers fail miserably without him.

you are the best Panther player of all time! Hands down! It is sad that a franchise is all about the money and not the dedication of one of the best players to ever play the game. You are and always will be #1 in my book. On and off of the field…:-)

Steve. You are the “heart and soul” of Carolina. You are “family,”not just a player and should be able to retire as a Panther. I can’t imagine watching a Panther game without you.If you do in fact play for another team it will be difficult not to pull for you against Carolina.

  • Denise Blalack

    Steve, we’ve enjoyed watching your incredible playing and we’ll miss you but please go to a team who the Panthers won’t have to play against! (( ;

  • Lynne Wayman

Maybe if pretty boy Cam had used him more, he could have shown that he’s still got it. I’m sure gonna miss him, Panthers won’t be the same without him.

The Carolina Panthers should have gotten rid of him long ago. All you people commenting on keeping him…WAKE UP! The Panthers stink and have for a long time now. You win a few games and you think that you’re good. Yes, he was a good player at one time but that was long ago too. Cam does nothing for the team either…Steve Smith is good at running his mouth and not being able to back it up. He should go away and retire already. He is NOT worth the 7 million they would have to pay him next year. Give some young kid a chance. Steve’s time is OVER!

  • Brandon

Sal you’re dumb, the Panthers stink? Yeah we only won our division and sat at 3rd place overall in the league going into the playoffs with a first round bye. You’re right, Panthers stink. Psht, gimme a break.

Why not johnathan stewart?? HE in not productive and hasent been the last few seasons. I dont care what people say about his attitude. He played with passion..And how many time has he dropped a pass?? not many…He gonna go elsewhere and win a ring…Ask John Fox bout that
