Ten-month employees at schools following the 2013-14 traditional academic calendar should not report to work Monday and should plan on taking a vacation day, officials said.

The make-up day will be Thursday, April 17, according to Guilford County Schools Director of Communications Cynthia Robbins Shah-Khan.

Officials said principals will still report to their schools to assess their buildings and help coordinate response efforts, if needed. Central offices will open on a normal schedule.

As of Sunday night, at least 18 schools are still without power, while others have downed tree limbs and debris that needs to be removed.

One school only has partial power, while another school's boiler stopped working, according to the school system.

Who is the IDIOT that decided the makeup day would be the 17th of April???? They already have a makeup day Monday the 14th?? Why didn’t they just add Tuesday the 15th? At least spring break would have 3 consecutive days in a row and a weekend! I have to wonder how many high school students will even bother to go? Common sense has flown completely out the window on this one.

They did announce this. Guilford county is going all of their spring break except for Friday now. I wish they would look at other alternatives.

They have already taken April 14, 15, 16, and the 17th was next in line. The only day off for Spring Break is now April 18th.

Diane, I’m not sure where you’re getting your info from, but GCS IS making their days up in a row. As of now, they are making them up the entire week of Spring Break, April 14, 15, 16 and 17 with the exception of Friday.

Hey Fox8 why can’t y’all do a news story about why these counties that have missed all these days and have now taken 4 spring break days apply for a waiver to the state so our kids don’t have to make these days up. Especially GCS because Guildford county was under a state of emergency Friday and tomorrow. Let parents know that this is an option and that they have to be the ones to tell the school boards what they want.

I would prefer they take some of the teacher workdays as makeup days instead of the vacation days for the kids. I know this winter has been difficult but teachers can do workdays on the weekends if they have to be off for weather. That’s how the rest of us have to handle things.

  • GCS Teacher

There aren’t any more teacher workdays left for teachers. The one that they had left at the end of March is now a snow make-up day! And teachers already take work home/go into school on the weekends to get work done, not to mention the countless hours they spend before and after school.

Some of the staff will take the whole week off anyway and there won’t be enough substitutes to even cover all of the classrooms. That really should not be allowed.
