Could guacamole and some salsas become victims of global warming? Possibly, says Chipotle Mexican Grill.

The restaurant chain, in an annual report, listed drought and global weather change among a long list of business risks faced by the company.

“Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients,” Chipotle said in the filing last month.

If the cost of ingredients jumps, the company said it “may choose to temporarily suspend” serving items such as guacamole or some salsas.

The warning was highlighted Tuesday by ThinkProgress, a liberal blog.

Chipotle says it uses 97,000 pounds of avocados a day — and 70 to make a single batch of guacamole. That comes out to nearly 18,000 tons of avocados a year.

Chipotle did not have an immediate comment on the warning in its filing. The company’s policy includes a “food with integrity” program that stresses using organic meats and crops whenever possible with an eye towards the sustainability of the food supply.

California, a major source of the nation’s avocado crop, is currently suffering from a severe drought, despite heavy rains in the last week.

A 2006 study by scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory projected that the state’s agriculture production, including that of avocados, could be cut by as much as 40% by the middle of the century due to global climate change.

In between the years 1991-2012, 13,950 peer reviewed articles on global climate change were written. Of those nearly 14,000 articles, only 24 rejected the theory of global climate change. Just sayin…

who wrote the articles and who were the so called peers? weather facts show that themperatures have not warmed in over 25 years and before that the increase was extremely small. besides that we have only been keeping weather stats for less then 200 years. by the way, how is that glacier in your backyeard doing since North America was once covered by a glacier?

Global warming does not exist , Never has . Global change does and it is a natural occurrence . At one point the weather was hot and humidity was high all around the world , or at least the land mass . This has been proven . After that most of the world was plunged into and Ice age . Also proven . There were not industrial businesses producing CO2 at the time the world was hotter or when the Ice age ended . The earth goes through cycles mostly due to cycles the Sun goes through . as well as the CO2 that volcanoes release which is 10 times more than every car / business on earth . You cant stop global warming , the natural kind , or global cooling . It just happens and you deal with it by getting used to it .
