VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- A Navy F/A-18E jet crashed approximately 45 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to WTKR.

A Navy spokesman told WTKR the pilot was able to eject the aircraft before the crash and deployed a life raft upon hitting the water. He has been taken to a local hospital.

The Navy reported to WTKR the pilot was conscious when he was picked up by a fisherman in the area, but that he is in critical condition.

The crash comes one week after a Navy MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopter went down off the coast of Virginia Beach claiming three lives, including the life of a Greensboro man.

The Navy will investigate the cause of the crash.
