CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 3-year-old was found wandering alone wearing only a diaper for the second time in just months.

WSOC reported the woman, who was caring for the child at the time, said she was asleep early Saturday morning when the child unlocked the door and walked about a block away to a car wash.

“That’s an awful thing to have a 3-year-old in a diaper in this type weather,” said the woman.

Police said shortly before 9 a.m., a passerby spotted the boy standing in the parking lot in freezing-cold temperatures wearing only a diaper.

The man called 911 and police said when they arrived, the boy was so cold, his fingers and toes were blue.

Police have no idea how long he had been standing there but he was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

The Department of Social Services was called in and later released the boy back to his mother.

No charges have been filed and police are still investigating the incident.

“A 3-year-old was found wandering alone wearing only a diaper for the second time in just months.”

…and they released the child back into the custody of the mother? Does not look like she is making safe choices for this child.

What happened to getting up with or before your child? What happened to making sure the child lives in a safe environment?

“According to WSOC, the woman, who was caring for the child at the time, said she was asleep early Saturday morning when the child unlocked the door and walked about a block away to a car wash.”

No where in this sentence does it say anything about it being the boy’s mother.

  • DALE YOW

Talk about letting a child slip through the cracks 2 times this happened 1time should have been enough bet this want be the last time you hear about this child

Who ever is caring for this child needs better locks on the door since this is the 2nd time this has happened. I’m glad he got home safe. I’m really hoping this was a accident not neglect. And yes some 3 yr olds may still need diapers they may not be potty trained 100%….

I am glad that you are one of the people that pointed out, There are 3 year olds that are not potty trained yet, And that does not mean that there Is any thing wrong with the child…I also agree they should do something about the locks so that this does not happen again It is a very scarey thought

My son at 11 months old, crawled out of his baby bed ( for the first time) and went out side. some where between the hours if 5am and 730 am. I awoke to a thumping sound, that was him hitting the storm door bc he couldn’t reach the handle.
it only happened one time! by that evening, we put locks at the very top of every door leading to the outside in the house, plus the door to the basement!
Happening once…. it’s a scare, but one you can prevent in the future. but twice!!!! someone is being negligent.

I don’t know what the deal is in this case BUT when my oldest son was 2,he was very smart and has adhd.He would get up when we were asleep, early and go unlock doors & dead bolt and go outside and knock on peoples door to talk to them…we lived at a apartment complex, the neighbor brought him back to me and I explained to him not to EVER leave the house without me knowing..he thought it was funny,he said he ”sneaked” out and was very quite…So I went and bought this slide lock thing and installed it at the VERY top of the door.He got up during the night ,got a chair and put alot of books on it and gets that lock undone!Luckly I woke up as soon as he opened the door that time.So then I got a rope thing and wrapped it around the slide lock and nalied it to the wall so he couldnt move it…about one month later he somehow got that undone also!!!He would do this sometimes when I was in the bathroom too.I wanted to install a deadbolt that unlocked from the inside but the landlord wouldnt allow that.So please don’t judge something when u have no idea.BTW I have another son that never did such things.

it is very common for toddlers to open doors to the outside and go out of them. Some children are more curious than others. The first time it happened though would have been something I prevented from happening again.

Unless the child has special medical needs, it should not be in diapers at 3..wow .I can see anything happening once, but that should be a lesson learned. A child care provider should never be asleep..never. I pity the child for having to live in this condition, I hope DSS will help remedy the situation.

I have a very normal 3 year Old son and he Is still In diapers and he is my 4th Child,He just doesn’t like to go to the potty yet not all children are potty trained at the same age actually there are a lot more 3 year olds in diapers than not, People judge people so much It Is just ridiculous…

Sometimes 3 yr olds have to wear diapers at night so they do not wet the bed… not every child is the same. One child I knew wore diapers to bed until they were 6 yrs old due to a medical issue… so we shouldn’t be so quick to judge/question why this child had on a diaper at 3. I have a son who liked to escape when he was younger.. I put window alarms on my doors so if he opened a door they screeching alarm woke everyone on my block lol.

why is a 3 year old wearing a diaper anyways, muchless only a diaper…. and they released the child back to the care of the mother – only for this to happen again?
