Ric Flair was welcomed with open arms Saturday night at the 49ers' hotel in Wisconsin.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-native and former professional wrestler Ric Flair apparently has flip-flopped from supporting his hometown Panthers to the 49ers, as reported by ESPN’s David Newton.

Flair showed up Saturday night at the 49ers’ hotel in Green Bay, wearing dark sunglasses and entering to the music of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Flair said he couldn’t be more honored that somebody from the organization contacted the WWE and asked that he show up to give a motivational speech to the team, and cracked jokes about them coming to Charlotte this week before they beat Green Bay Sunday.

“That’s my hometown,” he laughed. “Cam ain’t going to like that, either.”

Flair then said that the Panthers were “lucky” to beat the 49ers 10-9 earlier this season in San Francisco, and admitted “I didn’t know the guys beat you this year.”

Then he called the 49ers “Ric Flair’s team.”

Flair said he received death threats after his 49ers speech and he plans on skipping the Panthers playoff game, according to Sportingnews.com.

Below is a statement Flair released Thursday via Facebook:

I’ve got to agree with JC and Tim. He must be broke if he has to take a gig to give a pep talk to professional football players and it’s really hard for me to understand how the 49’s organization would find this helpful to their team.

First of all, Ric Flair is a respected athlete who dedicated his entire adult life to his sport. The 49’ers specifically asked for Mr. Flair to come give a speech. Very few athletes are given the respect that Flair is given, in any sport. Regardless of anyone’s opinion of wrestling, Flair’s career and legacy should be respected.

The Panthers ARE Ric’s team. He was giving a speech to motivate a team. I thought it was pretty cool that the 49er’s asked for him, and I don’t think this diminishes his love for the Panthers. (IMO)
