NC teacher resigns after being charged with soliciting child
ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — A high school teacher in Onslow County resigned after being arrested and charged with soliciting sex from a child, according to WCTI12.com.
John Tobias Sweeney, 36, of Jacksonville, was charged with solicitation of a child by a computer or other electronic device to commit an unlawful sex act.
Authorities said Sweeney was an English teacher and soccer coach at Southwest High School near Jacksonville, but resigned after being arrested by Onslow County deputies Thursday.
The suspect allegedly used social media and texting from June to September to try to meet a 13-year-old for sex.
Deputies said the victim is a student who lives out of state. Investigators have not released specific details on the case.
School officials said Sweeney had been teaching English at Southwest High School since 2006 and had also taught at New Bridge Middle School. He had reportedly been with the school district for 14 years.
The suspect was issued a $10,000 secure bond and posted bail. He had court planned for Friday.
