Report finds antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs’ widespread in US chicken
About half of the raw chicken breasts in the nation carried antibiotic-resistant “superbug” bacteria, according to Consumer Reports.
According to the report released today, based on a national survey of over 300 chicken raw chicken breasts purchased from retailers, more than half of the samples contained fecal contaminates. Additionally, about half of the chicken breasts harbored at least one bacterium that is resistant to three or more regularly prescribed antibiotics.
Concern over antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” has become such a concern to the CDC that they released a report on them in September.
More than two million people fall ill to antibiotic-resistant infections every year, according to the CDC.
