Suspects arrested after fatal shooting near Wingate University
WINGATE, N.C. — Police have arrested two suspects at an apartment complex in Monroe overnight in connection to a fatal shooting near Wingate University, according to WSOC.
Daniel Steven Sheerer and Tony Antwone Knotts, both of Marshville, are being held without bond at the Union County Jail after authorities said they were arrested at Willow Oaks Apartments.
Authorities said the shooting happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday and left two people dead and a third injured. The victims’ names have not been released.
Officials said the university immediately went into a lockdown, which was lifted around 8:30 p.m.
The shooting occurred on East Wilson Street near the entrance to the College Park community, according to the university’s Twitter page.
Police said Sheerer and Knotts are both charged with two counts first-degree murder, one count each of attempted first-degree murder and one count each of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Officers said the pair subsequently confessed to breaking into several homes in the Union County area.
Authorities said no university students or employees were believed to be involved in the incident, according to a statement from the university.
A motive for the shooting was not released. The investigation is ongoing.
