RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities said a driver looking at a text message caused a 4-vehicle crash in Raleigh that resulted in two people being hospitalized.

WTVD-TV reported that 26-year-old Aaron Artis has been charged with texting while driving and failure to maintain lane control.

Investigators said Artis was driving on Interstate 540 near Aviation Parkway when he looked to read a text message around 9:30 a.m.

When he looked up, officials said he found himself barreling toward a family that had pulled over on the median to change a tire. The family consisted of a mother and her two children, authorities said.

As he was trying to straighten out, investigators said he hit another car. Officials said the female driver of that vehicle was seriously injured and was sent to Duke University Hospital.

The two children standing in the median were not hit and are doing okay, but officials said their mom was taken to Duke with minor injuries.
