CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — UNC Athletic Director Steve Kirschner confirmed Thursday PJ Hairston and Leslie McDonald will not play in the season opener against Oakland on Friday.

Prior to Roy Williams’ Thursday news conference, Kirschner said they are still working with the NCAA on the “ongoing compliance issue.”

Both Hariston and McDonald have been practicing with the team, Williams said.

When asked if he expects Hairston back “at all,” Roy Williams said “I’m an optimistic person.”

Im a Carolina fan, but PJ and McDonald deserve what they get….especially PJ. I just hate it for the University and the team as a whole. Williams runs a good program. It’s a share a negative shadow is being cast over the program because of one players continued mishaps…
