GREENSBORO, N.C. — Brian Clarey, the editor of YES! Weekly, was laid off Tuesday after working at the Triad newspaper for nine years.

“The decision was a long time coming, and I bear no ill will,” Clarey said in an email to local media and the newspaper’s readers and friends.

YES! Weekly is an alternative weekly newspaper that was started in Greensboro in 2005. It is published by Womack Newspapers Inc. of Greensboro.

Publisher Charles Womack said Tuesday that Clarey was laid off for economic reasons.

“The economy is tough for everybody,” Womack said. “It was time for a change. I love him (Clarey) like a brother. It was one of the toughest things I’ve had to do.”

Clarey thanked the newspaper’s staff for their work during his tenure as editor. He also saluted the people of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point “for allowing me this time to tell your stories,” Clarey wrote in his email.

Womack said he plans to replace Clarey, but he doesn’t have a timetable for the new hire.
