WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem based Novant Healthcare says it’s new MyChart, an online medical records system patients can access, has been hugely successful especially with older adults now becoming more active online.

Since it’s launch a little over a year ago, Novant says 215,000 patients have signed up to use the system that allows patients to book appointments, email doctors, refill medications, request advice, check billing status, and almost immediately check test results.

Doctors say while they expected most of the users to be younger, nearly 91,000 of those signed up are over 50.

Carolyn Deer is 75 and uses it weekly.

“If you have an account like a bank account or Amazon account or anything like that, it’s the same and it’s that simple. You can track for yourself how you’re doing and if you’re doing what your doctor told you to do,” Deer said.

Dr. Gwen Wigand-Bolling said it makes doctors more efficient and helps them communicate with patients.

“Oh I love it. It makes me feel like I can be a better doctor. A patient can email me with a question or concern and I can get back to them right away, for example my hypertension patients and diabetics the people I am trying to regulate. They would normally need to come in say every three days to get sugar and medicine readjusted, this way they can email me their sugar value and it’s wonderful. I can say, ‘okay increase medicine or decrease whatever,’” Wigland-Bolling said.

Novant said this year more than 13,000 appointments have been booked online. More than 450 Novant related doctor’s offices are now using the MyChart technology.

Novant plans to begin offering virtual doctor visits via online video conferencing sometime in the next month.
