WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — We like our tea sweet, our barbecue with red slaw, and our movies spooky.
Winston-Salem came in seventh in Amazon.com’s list of “Most Horrified Cities,” which was released for Halloween. The list looks at the viewing habits of people around the country using the Amazon Instant Video streaming service.
“Whether a horror classic or a new psychological thriller, the list shows that Southerners enjoy a good scare,” according to a news release, “with 7 out of 10 cities on the top streaming list coming from Southern states.”
Charleston was No. 1 on the list, followed by New Orleans, San Antonio, Little Rock, Louisville (the setting of the 1984 horror-comedy classic “The Return of the Living Dead”), and Las Vegas. Rounding out the top 10 were Albuquerque, Anchorage and Baton Rouge.
According to Amazon, some of the horror-oriented movies and shows that are currently proving popular include “The Conjuring,” a newly released thriller that was filmed in the Wilmington area; “Curse of Chucky,” the latest in the seemingly never-ending film series about the wisecracking killer doll; “The Shining,” Stanley Kubrick’s stylish adaptation of Stephen King’s novel; and, no surprise, “The Walking Dead,” AMC’s monster hit about the survivors of a zombie apocalypse, which is filmed in Georgia.
We’re not sure why Winston-Salem rates so high on the list of horror movie-loving cities. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that such horror classics as “Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth” and “Cabin Fever” were shot in this area.
