Pedestrian in Winston-Salem hit by car, killed

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police said a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car while trying to cross the road.

Police said 48-year-old Duane Allen Williams died after being hit by a 1997 Toyota Avalon around 7:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Silas Creek Parkway and Hawthorne Road.

Police said the driver was headed south of Silas Creek Parkway and the victim was walking east.

The driver of the Avalon said he did everything he could to try to avoid the crash including making an evasive maneuver.

The driver was not injured. Police said he pedestrian was pronounced dead after being taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit was notified and assumed the investigation. Authorities did not say if charges are expected to be filed.
