ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page is offering Halloween safety tips for people planning to celebrate the popular holiday.

Page sent out a statement to local media on Wednesday offering tips for motorists, parents, trick-or-treaters, homeowners and people passing out candy.

Page said motorists should watch for children darting between cars, people in dark clothing and people walking on roadways.

He said parents should check the sex offender registry, discuss a possible route and travel in familiar areas.

Page also said costumes should be made with fire-retardant materials and they should be loose and not long enough for children to trip on.
