Man critically injured in Rockingham Co. moped accident

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A man was critically injured in a moped accident on Sunday night near Stoneville.

Troopers said Fausto Hernandez, 48, of 207 Brown St., Stoneville, was riding his moped in the southbound lanes of US 220 near Mountain Road around 8 p.m. A vehicle also headed south struck the moped from behind.

Hernandez was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He is listed in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle said Hernandez was operating the moped with the lights off. The moped has been sent to the State Bureau of Investigation to determine if the lights were working.

Troopers say there were no other factors in the crash.

No charges have been filed.
