NC teen, girlfriend charged with attempting to kill mom
CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A 17-year-old and his 16-year-old girlfriend are charged with attempted murder after the 17-year-old’s mother was found on Wednesday with a gunshot wound to the head, according to WSOC.
An off-duty sheriff’s deputy found Sherry Rhoney lying in the grass on Wednesday near a home on Old Shelby Road in southwest Catawba County. Rhoney was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Rhoney was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.
Daniel Rhoney, 17, the victim’s son, and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Fowler, 16, told deputies they arrived home to find Rhoney suffering from a gunshot wound. WSOC spoke to the couple on Wednesday and they both said they had no idea what happened.
“She’s a very helpful woman. I’m seven months pregnant and she has done everything for me and my child. I can’t believe somebody would hurt her,” Fowler said.
Investigators believe the couple lied about what happened on Wednesday. The sheriff said Rhoney woke up briefly at the hospital and told deputies what happened.
“They lied to you,” Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid told WSOC. “No doubt in my mind about that.”
The Hickory Daily Record is reporting investigators determined Daniel Rhoney shot his mother during an argument. Sherri Rhoney reportedly told her son he was going to have to move out of her home.
Reid told the paper Fowler took part in an assault which left Sherri Rhoney with bruises in addition to the gunshot wound to the head.
Daniel Rhoney is being held on $1 million bond and Fowler is being held on $500,000 bond. Both suspects are charged with attempted murder.
