Multiple accidents snarl traffic on Business 40 in Winston-Salem
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Multiple car accidents caused by a sudden downpour snarled rush hour traffic on Business 40 westbound in Kernersville Thursday evening.
Thirty-seven cars were involved in at least 10 different wrecks between South Main St. and the Hastings Hill overpass, backing up traffic for miles. Minor injuries were reported in a few of the accidents, according to police.
According to NC Highway Patrol, a sudden downpour around 6:30 p.m., combined with bright sun, made it difficult for drivers in the area to see.
“At about 6:30 p.m., traffic was heavy anyway, on this part of the interstate. Then you factor in the heavy rain, the bright sun and most of all people not slowing down, people not giving enough following distance between them and the vehicle in front of them and this is what happens,” said Sgt. Stell.
At least 10 citations were handed out to drivers for various violations, including failing to reduce speed and exceeding safe speed for conditions.
All lanes on Business 40 reopened just after 8:30 p.m.
