Being out of work is tough for anyone regardless of age. But if you’re in your 50s or 60s, it can be even tougher to land a new job.
According to career expert Randy Wooden, being overqualified can sometimes work against you. Employers might be concerned that you may not be challenged with your job, that you may not be happy with what you’re making and that you may leave as soon as you find a better position.
If a potential employer asks you a question that expresses such a concern, Wooden says it’s best to address the question in a calm and polite manner. You may consider telling them that, even though the position may be a step back from what you’ve done in the past, if it can lead to a step forward — it could result in a net gain for both yourself and the employer.
