COROLLA, N.C. — A husband and wife vacationing with their four children were struck by a vehicle and killed Monday morning while walking on a path next to the road, according to The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk.

Wesley and Elizabeth Martin, of Lancaster, Pa., were walking on the path that parallels N.C. 12 just before noon when a Honda CR-V struck and killed them about 10 feet off the road, a spokesman with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol told the paper.

The driver said he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. He didn’t try to flee, and there were no signs of alcohol or drug use, the spokesman said.

The driver, Troy Bowman, 50, of Ashburn, Va., has been charged with reckless driving and two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The Martins’ four children range in age from 11 to 18, he said. They were on the beach with family members at the time of the crash.
