RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina couple is accused of repeatedly locking their 6-year-old in their basement and refusing to give him food, according to WRAL.

Cassandra Carmen Smith, 25, and Serge Daniel Germain Jr., 47, both of Raleigh, were charged with misdemeanor child abuse on Friday.

Investigators said Smith, the child’s mother, and Germain, the child’s stepfather, began locking the child in the basement of their home in October 2010.

The couple told WRAL News Saturday that the crime never happened. Germain said it is impossible to lock the door from inside.

Germain said the couple is being “persecuted” by the Department of Social Services.

“It’s a nightmare,” he said, according to WRAL. “They want to take my kids. These kids are my life. I love my children.”

Both suspects were released from custody on separate $5,000 bonds.
