NC deck collapse sends 21 to hospital

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. -- More than 20 people were taken to area hospitals on Tuesday night after a second-story deck on a condominium collapsed onto a patio below.

The first calls about the collapse, which occurred at 83 Ocean Isle West Blvd, came in at 8:17 p.m. after the deck gave way onto a concrete patio, according to The StarNews.

EMS said the group was preparing to take a photo when the deck collapsed.

Emergency services director Anthony Marzano said the injuries included cuts and broken bones but none of the injuries was life-threatening.

Thirteen people were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and seven were taken to Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Supply.

One victim was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

Marzano said about 25 people were on the deck when it collapsed.

The home is a private residence that was being rented, officials said.
