Winston-Salem man crashes into school, dies of medical issue

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Winston-Salem Journal) — A Winston-Salem died Monday after his car struck the Arts Based Elementary School at 1380 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, authorities said.

Raymond Clanton Jr., 58, who lived in the 700 block of North Chestnut Street, had stopped his car in the school’s parking lot when he suffered a medical emergency shortly before 2 p.m., Winston-Salem police said. Clanton then accelerated and drove through the children’s playground, hitting the building.

There were no children on the playground at the time, police said. No one was injured.

Clanton was pronounced dead at the scene; his death was caused by health-related issues, police said. The crash did not involve alcohol or excessive speed, authorities said.
