GREEN RIVER, N.C. — Deputies say a 19-year-old from Henderson County drowned in an area that was restricted and closed to the public.

WLOS reports former prep football star Tre Carter, who graduated from North Henderson High School in 2012, and his three friends were diving into Lake Summit from a Norfolk Southern railroad trestle.

At some point during the outing, WLOS reports Carter began having trouble swimming.  His friends went out to help, but he went underwater before they could reach him.

The area where the group was diving reaches depths of 80 feet and temperatures can be as cold as 39 degrees, the station reports.

Maj. Frank Stout with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office tells WLOS deputies have written numerous trespassing citations due to people diving off the same trestle.
