WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem man charged with DUI in a head-on collision that left one woman dead now faces more charges.

Winston-Salem police said Tuesday an arrest warrant was served for 33-year-old Samuel Ray Cox on charges of second-degree murder and felony death by motor vehicle.

Police had already charged Cox with driving while intoxicated in a crash that killed Shelba C. Lane of Pinnacle.

Police said a Mazda pickup driven by Cox collided head-on with a Dodge Neon driven by Lane in the 300 block of Meadowlark Drive around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Cox crossed the center line, causing the wreck. They said the victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where she was pronounced dead on Sunday.

The suspect is being held on a $375,000 secured bond and has court planned for Aug. 20.

Winston-Salem police said this was the city’s eighth motor vehicle fatality this year.
