Winston-Salem barbecue team wins top prize at Ribfest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem based barbecue team is the 2013 Grand Champion of the 9th Annual Texas Pete Twin City RibFest.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Carolina Smokin John’s BBQ took the top prize Saturday during the ribfest, which will run through Sunday at the corner of North Marshall and West Fifth streets in downtown Winston-Salem.

The BBQ team was one of nine teams competing for the grand prize, and one of four from North Carolina.

This is the BBQ team’s first year participating in the ribfest. Carolina Smokin John’s also won the Home Boy trophy for best North Carolina contestant.

Pitmaster John Young let out a holler and jumped up and down when he heard Carolina Smokin John’s name announced as the winner.

“Representing the home town,” he said.
