ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An Asheville mother has been reunited with her 18-month-old son after authorities said someone jumped inside her car and drove off with the baby inside.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that the crime allegedly happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday outside the Eblen Short Stop gas station on Broadway Street.

Police said the mother, Latesia Watley, was walking back to her car after picking up a few things when the carjacking occurred.

The suspect allegedly drove off with the baby strapped in his car seat in the back.

Police said they found the car abandoned about an hour later off Flint Street about a mile away with the toddler still inside.

Watley said she believes the would-be kidnapper abandoned the car once he realized the child was in the backseat.

Police said the child has since been returned home safely. They said they are still searching for the suspect.
