Gastonia wrestling coach faces more sex charges
GASTONIA, N.C. — A third person has accused the wrestling coach at East Gaston High School in Mt. Holly of sex crimes.
The Gaston Gazette reported that Gary Scott Goins, 44, was back in court on Friday on two new counts of crime against nature.
The suspect was charged with 15 child sex crimes after police arrested him Wednesday morning at his home.
He was charged with 14 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child or student and one count of statutory rape of a minor, age 6 or older.
Authorities said the alleged incidents happened between 1998 and 2004. The alleged victims were all under 16 at the time and members of the wrestling team.
District Attorney Locke Bell said some of the crimes happened during wrestling trips with the students in places including Florida, Las Vegas and Ohio.
Gaston County authorities said a former student came forward with accusations in February.
Investigators said a second suspect emerged as they checked into the allegations. A relative of one of the initial accusers now claims he was also abused.
Goins was released on bond and is suspended with pay. Defense attorney Brent Ratchford appeared in court with him Friday.
The suspect also teaches science at East Gaston High School, where his wife also works. The paper reported that about 30 people showed up in court to support the suspect.
