CLEMMONS, N.C. — A black bear was struck by a car and killed on I-40 near Clemmons early Saturday morning.

According to Teddy Burriss, the bear was struck near exit 188 before 6 a.m.

When officers discovered the bear early Saturday, no other vehicles or persons were at the scene.

NC Wildlife Officials responded to the scene and took custody of the bear.

Several people had reported seeing a bear wandering out Winston-Salem, with the most recent sightings early Friday morning near Wynbrook Drive. When an officer arrived on Friday, police say the officer found the bear eating out of a bird feeder on the property.

Another sighting was reported on Friday in the area of Carmike Wynnsong Theatre at 4510 Kester Mill Road.  Police say they found the bear near the intersection of Jonestown Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard.

The bear was last seen heading west toward Kirk Road behind a Wendy’s restaurant.

Police said they are unable to confirm the deceased bear on I-40 is the same animal seen in Winston-Salem over the last few days, however it was similar in size and description.
