DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said a pregnant mother and her small child were both killed after a speed boat struck a pontoon boat on High Rock Lake on Saturday afternoon.
Officials said the crash happened around 12:30 p.m. near the 1700 block of Hickory Point Drive. Eight people were involved in the accident, two in each boat.
Authorities said the female victim, Melissa Chambers Britt, 32, of Oak Ridge, was ejected into Swearing Creek, a part of High Rock Lake. Her body was found Saturday afternoon after crews searched the area.
The woman’s child, 3-year-old William Jaiden Britt died after being taken to the hospital.
Officials said Melissa Britt’s brother, Michael Chambers, suffered critical head injuries but is expected to recover. He was listed in serious condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Monday afternoon.
Authorities said the victims were all family members and were riding on the pontoon boat. The driver, the father, was not injured. The family dog, also on the boat, is missing.
They said the speed boat was driving well over 25 mph in a shallow part of the lake. No one on the speed boat was injured.
Rescue crews and about 50 volunteers were on the scene. Authorities said there is no indication of alcohol being a factor, but speed may have played a role in the accident.
Officials said the driver of the speed boat will have to wait until next week to hear from the Davidson County district attorney about possible criminal charges. The investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors said they now worry for their own safety as more boaters are expected to be on the lake this Memorial Day weekend.
“It worries me because I got a 17 year old and he goes on the pontoon sometimes and then I got my 5-five-year-old, it’s just scary,” said Patina Nelson.
