WINSTON-SALEM–A substitute teacher at Philo-Hill Magnet School said he accidentally left a handgun in the front seat of his car after it was discovered by police investigating a car alarm sounding in the school parking lot, The Winston-Salem Journal reports.

George Frederick Hall II, 27, of Oak Ridge, was arrested Thursday and charged with possession of a weapon on a school campus, according to the report. Hall told police he accidentally left the weapon in the vehicle after visiting a local gun range Wednesday. He was cooperative and claimed ownership of the weapon, according to police reports.

Hall was hired as a substitute teacher by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools April 5 and became a long-term substitute April 10, said Theo Helm, school spokesman. Helm said Hall was supposed to fill a vacancy for a science teacher until the end of the year. Helm said the school will hire another long-term substitute to finish out the school year.
