SALISBURY, N.C. — A two-year-old boy died in an overnight house fire in Salisbury.

WSOC reports firefighters responded to the Davis Street home just before 1 a.m.

The boy’s identity has not been released.

Officials say the blaze started in the back of the home where the boy was sleeping, WSOC reports.

Neighbors tell WSOC they tried breaking a window to save the boy.  A teenage girl cut her hand breaking the glass.  Police also made efforts to rescue the boy.

“There were some very heroic attempts by the police officers to go in under fire conditions unprotected,” Salisbury Fire Chief Robert Parnell told WSOC.  “Unfortunately, it just didn’t work out to where the child could be saved.”
