Ashley Furniture plans April 17 groundbreaking on Davie Co. site
DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. — Ashley Furniture Industries Inc. appears to have cleared an environmental hurdle that will allow it to build a 507,000-square-foot distribution center in eastern Davie County.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Ashley, the country’s largest furniture manufacturer and retailer, announced in April 2012 it planned to invest $80 million in a 680-acre site on Baltimore Road near Advance.
The discovery of four acres of wetlands on what is slated to be the center site could have delayed the highly anticipated project for a year. The company said the center could have up to 550 jobs when at full production.
However, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued Ashley a temporary, proffered permit for the site March 28. The permit is needed to build on or at a wetlands site. The Corps regulates wetlands under the authority of the federal Clean Water Act.
“The permit is not finalized yet because we’re waiting on the company to review it, see if they agree with it and sign and send it back to us,” John Thomas, a project manager for the Corps of Engineers, said Tuesday.
