GIBSONVILLE, N.C.-- A Gibsonville woman barely missed being hit by a train on Wednesday afternoon as she was crossing the train tracks on Burke St.
Denise Smith was waiting to turn onto Springwood Avenue as a tractor-trailer in front of her was making a wide turn.
"What can I do I can't beat a truck, sure can't beat a train, I mean I beat this one. I'm still here," Smith said.
Smith wasn't on the train tracks, but she was close enough for one of the crossing arms to smash down on the front of her car.
"All I saw was the arms coming down and then I said 'oh no' and then I started looking for the train that's when i realized the train was coming," explained Smith.
She was able to get out of her car and get far enough away from the tracks just in time.
"I couldn't believe it I took two steps and looked back and the train hit my car that quick," Smith said.
The Amtrak train was heading towards Burlington and going about 70 mph. Smith's car was totaled, but she says that's the least of her worries. She's just happy luck was on her side. "Thankful, nothing but thankful God to be glory."
Gibsonville Police do not expect to give out any citations in this incident. They said it was just bad timing, a bad situation that had a good ending.
