RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.3 million contract to Astron General Contracting Company Inc. to clean and paint six bridges on U.S. 220 and Wendover Avenue in Guilford County.

The contract includes the U.S. 220 bridges over Yanceyville Street, Elm Street and the Southern Railroad and the Wendover Avenue bridges over Holden Road, West Market Street and Friendly Avenue.

The work will begin as early as April 16.

It is expected to be complete within four months.

The project is the second phase of the preservation work on the bridges.  The first phase involved resurfacing the bridge decks with latex-modified concrete to preserve the bridge decks and extend the lifespan of the bridges.  It was completed in November 2012.
