Visine poisoning alleged by girlfriend

A California man was arrested in connection with a case of alleged Visine poisoning after he reportedly put eye drops in his girlfriend’s drink during a fight.

KXTV is reporting Shayne Carpenter, 27, was arrested in Nevada after his girlfriend became ill following the incident.

Officials told KXTV Carpenter’s girlfriend became suspicious after finding texts on Carpenter’s phone to his friends about the alleged prank.

“She found some texts on her boyfriend’s phone that indicated he had put Visine in her drink,” said Lt. Steve Tripp of the Nevada County Sheriff Department.

As part of the investigation, officers had the girl talk to Carpenter on the phone and he admitted to the “prank.”

The dangerous chemical is known as Tetrahydrozoline. While the chemical will not produce diarrhea, oral administration can induce other side effects including low body temperature, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, difficulty breathing, seizures and possible coma.

According to Visine’s website, Visine’s “Redness Relief Drops” contain .05% Tetrahydrozoline. The chemical is described by the company as a “redness reliever.”

The chemical can also be found in several other over-the-counter eye drops and nasal sprays.

Carpenter was arrested on poisoning and domestic violence charges. He was released from jail on $25,000 bail and is due in court next month.
