Archdale residents: Trash collecting along edge of Muddy Creek

GREENSBORO, N.C. — People who live on Canter Road near Archdale say they’re tired of driving by a makeshift dump every day.

“Milk jugs, gas cans, soft drink bottles, basketballs, even a boogie board,” said Jerry Boyles, who lives nearby.

The residents say trash has been gathering at the edge of Muddy Creek where a culvert helps pull in water from the creek.  The water is part of the reservoir system of the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority.

Litter does not get pulled through the culvert, so it is left to collect along the edge of the creek.

“We found things in there that Walmart doesn’t have on the shelves. Where (did) it come from?” Boyles said.

“I know they’ve got it designed this way to catch the trash, which is fine, but I think the lake authority ought to come out and at least clean it up,” said neighbor Melvin Canter.

Gregory Flory, director of The Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority, says they sent a crew to clean the spot about three years ago.

Since then, they’ve focused on cleaning up other areas, Flory said.  They plan to address the Canter Road culvert area again soon, he added.

“We are aware of it,” Flory said.  “We have had it scheduled to clean it up.  We have to actually get people out there in boats, wearing waiters, and just from a safety standpoint we need to wait until the water temperature gets up a little more.”

Flory says a lot of the trash is litter from drivers on nearby highways.  He said wind also blows a lot of garbage from yards and trash cans from across the area and it all ends up downstream.

“As we get rain, a lot of trash ends up washed up there and gathered at that point,” Flory said.

Flory says water brought in from the Canter Road spot is filtered by three different methods. Litter, he said, does not affect water quality.

“Just as soon as possible, I’d like to see them get in here and clean it all up,” Canter said.

Canter says he hopes weather is warmer in March and April so they can schedule a cleanup.
