New bill could put restrictions on moped drivers

GREENBORO, N.C. — A new bill in the North Carolina General Assembly could require moped drivers to carry insurance.

Lawmakers who support the new legislation, want to make sure that moped drivers have the same protections that automobile and motorcycle drivers so.

Some of Greenboro’s 10,000 moped drivers, however, feel the new legislation may end up doing more harm than good.

John Hill owns Scooternerds in Greensboro and thinks the bill could increase drivers’ operating costs, causing them to second guess a moped purchase.

“I’m really concerned for the community that needs this product,” Hill said.

He also knows this bill has the potential to hurt his business.

“I don’t see how we can ever prevent that person that’s intent on not having insurance, but yet operating a motor vehicle whether it be a car or moped, from operating,” he said.

Lawmakers expect to see a companion bill filed in the state senate soon.

A vote could come as early as July 1.
